This conference has been designed for physicians, medical students/residents, and addiction professionals. Join physicians and other health professionals at the New York Society of Addiction Medicine’s Annual Medical-Scientific Conference. Learn about cutting-edge addiction medicine issues and exchange ideas about developments in NYS and across the nation. This conference offers state-of-the-art presentations highlighting the most recent developments in addiction medicine. This conference will increase your skills and build your confidence in evaluating and making appropriate decisions for treating addictive disorders in diverse populations.

Addiction Medicine Physician


Kelly S. Ramsey, MD, MPH, MA, FACP, DFASAM is a board certified internal medicine and addiction medicine physician who has treated substance use disorder since 2004. She has focused her career on providing care for people who use drugs, treating HIV, hepatitis C (HCV), and substance use disorder. She has worked in an opioid treatment program (OTP) and federally qualified health center (FQHC) settings. Dr. Ramsey previously worked as the Chief of Medical Services at the NYS Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS), in a policy, regulatory, and clinical role.

Dr. Ramsey currently works as an Addiction Medicine Physician and Addiction Medicine and Harm Reduction Consultant as well as providing low threshold clinical care and clinical supervision in addiction medicine in two drug user health hubs in New York.

Dr. Ramsey currently serves as Region I Director, representing NYS, on the national American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) Board of Directors.

Dr. Timothy J. Wiegand is a distinguished Medical Toxicologist and Addiction Specialist who serves as the Director of Addiction Medicine in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Rochester Medical Center. He is the founder of the Toxicology and Addiction Medicine Consult Service at URMC where he continues to provide bedside care for patients with intoxication, overdose, substance use disorder and addiction-related emergencies. Dr. Wiegand is a former President of the New York Society of Addiction Medicine (NYSAM) and had been a NYSAM Board member for over 8 years before stepping down.  Dr. Wiegand also currently serves as the Medical Director for two overdose prevention programs in Upstate New York—Recovery AllWays® (RAW) and HopeDealers BTC®. These programs are integral for  naloxone distribution and other harm reduction efforts in Monroe County, a critical region in New York grappling with fentanyl-related overdose deaths.  

 

Dr. Wiegand also serves as Co-chair for the New York Department of Health AIDS Institute Substance Use Care Guidelines Committee and holds the position of Treasurer for the Medical Toxicology Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the American College of Medical Toxicology (ACMT). Kristine Torres-Lockhart, MD, FASAM is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine and Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Montefiore Medical Center and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, as well as the founding director of the Addiction Consult Services at Montefiore Medical Center. She is Program Director of the Addiction Medicine Fellowship and Co-Director of the Addiction Medicine rotation for medical trainees. An addiction medicine and internal medicine physician, she leads the development and implementation of health system interventions to improve substance use disorder (SUD) care in acute care settings and transitions of care to post-acute and ambulatory care settings.


She is double board certified in addiction medicine and internal medicine and credentialed as an HIV specialist by the American Academy of HIV Medicine. 
She is the PI for a HRSA training grant and co-PI for an OASAS training grant to lead the development of educational opportunities in building the addiction medicine workforce.

Dr. Barry Logan is Sr. vice president of Forensic Sciences, and Chief Scientist for NMS Labs.  He is also Executive Director at the non-profit Center for Forensic Science Research and Education (CFSRE) at the Fredric Rieders Family Foundation in Willow Grove, Pennsylvania.

 

Dr. Logan is a Fellow of the American Board of Forensic Toxicologists (ABFT), and has over 200

publications in forensic toxicology and chemistry, including work on the effects of illicit and prescription drugs on drivers, and drug caused and related death.  His current research priorities are focused on new drug surveillance and trends, the polydrug crisis, and the analytical and interpretive toxicology and chemistry of novel psychoactive substances, founding www.NPSDiscovery.org in 2018.

 

Dr. Logan’s has academic appointments at Indiana University, Arcadia University and Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia.   He serves on the Advisory Board for NIDA’s National Drug Early Warning System (NDEWS).  In recognition of his work and contributions, Dr. Logan received TIAFT’s Alan Curry Award in 2022 and is a past President of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS).

Tiffany Lu, MD, MS is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Psychiatry at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, New York. She is currently Associate Director of Addiction Services at New York City Health & Hospitals/Jacobi where she serves as medical director of the hospital's opioid treatment program and leads addiction care and education initiatives across the safety net health system.
Prior to joining Jacobi, Dr Lu was the Medical Director of Montefiore's Buprenorphine Treatment Network, where she led primary care-based opioid use disorder treatment across 7 community health centers. She also founded the Addiction Medicine "Bridge Clinic” to provide low-threshold care for people with substance use disorders. Dr. Lu was Principal Investigator of a federal grant to expand addiction education for medical students and residents and municipal contracts to integrate nurse care management for buprenorphine treatment.
Dr. Lu graduated from UCSF School of Medicine and completed her Internal Medicine Residency at Massachusetts General Hospital. She holds a Masters of Science in Clinical Research Methods from Albert Einstein College of Medicine. She is board certified in Internal Medicine and Addiction Medicine. In addition, Dr Lu is active with the American Society of Addiction Medicine as member of the Quality Improvement Council and Education Chair for the New York Chapter.

Linda Wang, MD is a general internist and addiction medicine specialist who cares for people who use drugs at the REACH Program at Mount Sinai. She received her medical degree from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and completed residency in the Primary Care and Social Internal Medicine Program at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx. She is interested in expanding access to substance use disorder treatment and providing stigma-free care for people who use drugs.

Judith Cole is a board-certified Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner and Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner, holding an MSN from Vanderbilt University and a BSN from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Judith has been working in healthcare since 2011 with the last five years dedicated to delivering primary care and addiction treatment to marginalized communities and individuals experiencing homelessness.


Judith’s practice is grounded in harm reduction with a commitment to low threshold treatment for Opioid Use Disorder. Formerly associated with Care for the Homeless, she provided primary care and substance use treatment in women’s homeless shelters. Currently, she serves as a prescribing clinician specializing in OUD treatment with Ophelia Health.


In 2023, she joined the Integrated Harm Reduction Department at Harlem United, where she launched the Harm Reduction Mobile Health Program, offering low-threshold buprenorphine treatment and wound care through street outreach. Her leadership extends to planning and implementing organization-wide Trauma Informed Care practices, along with creating clinical policies and education for Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) programs.


Judith is a member of NYSAM and sits on the Education Committee.

Betty Lee AGNP-BC, AAHIVS is a board-certified nurse practitioner currently working for Harlem United, an FQHC located in Harlem. Betty has worked as an RN and as an NP in street medicine, homeless healthcare, and MAT in the FQHC setting since 2018. She currently leads the mobile unit with Harlem United which provides services to unhoused people and the local community. In this past year, Betty became a certified HIV specialist and also spends time treating people living with HIV/AIDS. Betty is on the education committee with NYSAM.

Stefan G. Kertesz, MD, MSc is an investigator and physician in internal medicine and addiction medicine at the Birmingham VA Health Care System (BVAHCS), and Professor of Medicine at the Heersink School of Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Dr. Kertesz’s clinical work and research focuses on enhancing health care delivery for populations at high risk of receiving poor care, in particular persons experiencing homelessness.

His research has included a long-term interest in enhancing health and social services for populations experiencing homelessness, including housing, addiction recovery support, and service alterations to assure that primary care is effective. Over several years he led a team studying the adoption of Housing First within housing sponsored jointly by the US Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Miriam Komaromy, MD, is Professor of Medicine at Boston University.  She leads the Grayken Center for Addiction at Boston Medical Center (BMC), and is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Addiction Medicine.

Komaromy’s current research focuses on how to make addiction treatment more appealing, effective, and equitable for Black patients.  She co-leads a clinical trial funded by NIMH on the impact of Collaborative Care for co-occurring opioid use disorder and mental health disorders in primary care settings. She previously served as the Associate Medical Director of the ECHO Institute in New Mexico, where she pioneered the use of the ECHO model to teach primary care teams to treat addiction. She currently serves as the Vice President of the Board of Directors of the Association for Multidisciplinary Education and Research in Substance use and Addiction (AMERSA), and is a former member of the Board of Directors of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM).

Dr. Daniel Hoover specializes in the care of persons with substance use disorders, including withdrawal management services, medication to support recovery, and complex care coordination. He has helped develop and improve housing programs and integrate culturally specific services. John uses his experience of formerly being justice involved and currently in long term recovery from substance abuse, to help guide him in the work he does daily.

Dr. Vijayaraghavan is a Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco and a tobacco control researcher with a focus on people experiencing homelessness and those with behavioral health conditions. She is the Director of the UCSF Smoking Cessation Leadership Center, a Center focused on eliminating disparities in tobacco use prevalence among behavioral health populations. Through her work, she has intervened at the individual, community, health systems, and policy levels to increase access to cessation services. She co-directs a NIDA-funded postdoctoral training program at the UCSF Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education, focused on tobacco and substance use-related research.

Kirsten Smith, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor in the Behavioral Pharmacology Research Unit (BPRU) within the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences in the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. After earning her Masters in Social Work from the University of Kentucky and Ph.D. from the University of Louisville, Dr. Smith completed a 4-year postdoctoral fellowship at the National Institute on Drug Abuse Intramural Research Program in the Translational Addiction Medicine Branch. There, Dr. Smith lead a Phase II clinical trial examining the opioid withdrawal-suppressing effects of an experimental partial mu opioid agonist (TRV734). She also completed her NIDA K99-funded project that involved a national ecological momentary assessment of daily kratom use and a controlled kratom self-administration substudy that examined acute effects of commercial kratom products. Her current NIDA R00-funded study at BPRU is characterizing the pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics of kratom and spontaneous kratom withdrawal among chronic consumers. Dr. Smith has recently launched a pilot clinical trial investigating acute effects from kratom extracts. Dr. Smith plans to continue her kratom research by investigating the safety, tolerability, and human abuse potential of kratom in healthy adults using both standardized whole-leaf formulations and isolated alkaloids.

Dr. Sara Lorenz Taki serves as Chief Medical Officer for Greenwich House. She provides medical direction for all health services, including methadone and buprenorphine treatment in the opioid treatment program, mental health services, substance use disorder treatment, hepatitis C treatment, overdose prevention, harm reduction, and older adult services. 

 

Dr. Taki obtained her medical degree from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health and completed residency training at Montefiore. She is board-certified in addiction medicine and internal medicine. She currently serves on the Clinical Advisory Panel for OASAS and the Substance Use Guidelines Committee for the New York State Department of Health AIDS Institute. Dr. Taki trains healthcare providers and students from multiple medical institutions on the treatment of substance use disorders and hepatitis C.

Dr. Toomey is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts Medical School and Harvard Affiliated Emergency Medicine Programs. Jennifer S. Love MD MSCR is an assistant professor of emergency medicine and medical toxicology at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Dr. Pamela Mund joined the NYS Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS) Chief Medical Office in June 2022 as Associate Chief of Addiction Medicine. In her current role as Chief of Addiction Medicine, she co-leads the re-named Division of Medicine, Psychiatry and Nursing working to promote and support the implementation of evidence-based addiction medicine best practices in addition to providing medical expertise for the agency’s initiatives.

Following residency training in Primary Care Internal Medicine, Dr. Mund devoted 23 years to clinical practice, as a general internist and an HIV medicine and addiction medicine specialist. Her clinical career has spanned diverse treatment settings in Bronx, NY and Durham, NC, including community health centers, harm reduction medical programs, opioid treatment programs, and inpatient and outpatient addiction medicine specialty services.

As a clinician-educator at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein School of Medicine and a Duke University-affiliated Community Health Center. Mund embraced medical student and medical resident education, preparing the next generation of physicians for careers dedicated to excellence in healthcare for people who use substances and people living with HIV.

Dr. Mund readily credits much of her physician learning to the thousands of patients who, through their wisdom and stories, were her greatest educators.

Marco Barber Grossi, MD is a second-year resident in Internal Medicine-Primary Care at NYU Langone/Bellevue Hospital. He received his medical degree from Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons where he volunteered in a student-run clinic serving patients who used drugs. In residency, he has enjoyed working in a buprenorphine clinic and a clinic for patients with complex medical and psychiatric needs who are unstably housed. He hopes to continue to work with these populations after residency.
