Norm Wetterau, MD, FAAFP, DFASAM


Doctor Wetterau was the first graduate of University of Rochester’s Family Medicine Program.

In his rural practice in Dansville and Nundu ,New York he began treating alcohol problems with considerable success and this interest lead to his involvement in ASAM. He headed up the ASAM family medicine interest group and helped  form the STFM addiction group. He helped in the formation of NYSAM where he was its second president and a long term board member. He was involved in the formation of the Addiction Medicine Speciality Board. He was chapter council co-chairman of  ASAM and on the ASAM board. He was involved in three White House Conferences on Addiciton treatment. He was an early prescriber of buprenorphine and has taught many physicians to prescribe this. He was NY State Family Physician of the Year in 1998  and  New York State Association of Rural Health Rural Physician of the Year in 2008  He has taught  residents at the University of Rochester Family Medicine Residency for almost 50 years where he is now Clinical Professor Emeritus. He retired at age 80 in 2022.
